Date and Nut Bars

Classic family favorite, simple yet delicious.
Ingredients:
  • 0.33300000429153 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups dates, pitted and chopped
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.75 teaspoon salt
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup confectioners' sugar
Instructions:
  • Pour boiling water over dates in a small bowl and allow to cool. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) and grease a 10x10 inch baking pan.
  • In a medium bowl, combine shortening and white sugar until creamy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each one. Mix in dates with water. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and baking soda; then blend into the date mixture. Finally, fold in the nuts.
  • Evenly spread the mixture in the prepped 10x10 inch pan and bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven. Once cooled, slice into bars and coat each bar with confectioners' sugar.
