Experience the irresistible aroma and taste of freshly baked homemade white bread.
Ingredients:
  • 5 to 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 packages regular active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or shortening
  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine, melted
Instructions:
  • Combine 2 cups of flour with sugar, salt, and yeast in a large bowl. In a 1-quart saucepan, warm water and oil until it reaches 120°F to 130°F. Pour the warm liquids into the flour mixture and mix with an electric mixer on low speed until moistened. Increase the speed to medium and beat for 3 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally. Using a spoon, gradually incorporate 2 1/2 to 3 cups of flour until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  • Knead in additional 1/2 to 1 cup flour on floured surface until dough is smooth and elastic, approximately 5 minutes. Grease large bowl with shortening or cooking spray, then place dough in it. Cover loosely with greased plastic wrap and a cloth towel. Allow to rise in warm place (80° F to 85° F) for 45 to 60 minutes until doubled in size.
  • Prepare the loaf pans by greasing them with shortening or cooking spray. Use your fist to gently deflate the dough, then divide it in half. Roll out each half of the dough into a 16x8-inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Starting from an 8-inch side, tightly roll up the dough, sealing after each turn by pressing with your thumbs. Pinch the edge to seal, and press each end with the side of your hand. Tuck the ends under the loaf and place it seam side down in the pan. Cover the pans and allow the dough to rise in a warm place for 30 to 35 minutes, until the dough fills the pans and the tops of the loaves are about 1 inch above the edges of the pans.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Bake uncovered dough for 40 to 50 minutes until loaves have a hollow sound when tapped. Remove from pans, place on wire racks, and brush with melted butter. Let cool completely for about 1 hour before serving.
