Quick and easy homemade patty melts with less grease than diner versions.
Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 teaspoons butter
Instructions:
  • In a Dutch oven, melt butter and oil. Add onions, sprinkle with salt and pepper, sauté while stirring for 3 minutes. Cover and let onions caramelize for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid burning.
  • Mix together the ground beef, garlic salt, and pepper until well combined. Form the mixture into 4 rectangular patties.
  • Sear patties in a hot skillet for 3 to 4 minutes per side, flipping only once. Place Swiss cheese on top of each patty and generously add caramelized onions.
  • Position an oven rack 6 inches below the broiler and preheat the broiler.
  • Generously coat each slice of bread with creamy butter. Broil until perfectly golden and crunchy. Stack up your patty melts and enjoy right away.
