Bake a fragrant apple pie with a crumble topping that can be frozen and baked later.
Ingredients:
  • For the pie:
  • 1 single pie crust
  • 3 pounds (8 cups, about 6-8 whole) apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) sugar
  • 1/4 cup (35g) flour
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • For the topping:
  • 3/4 cup (110 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup (40g) pecan pieces, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons (35g) brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons (44g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 5 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  • Roll out the crust: Sprinkle flour on a surface, then roll out the pastry dough with a floured rolling pin into a circle 2 inches larger than a 9-inch pie plate. Carefully place the dough in the pie plate, press it gently onto the bottom and sides. Fold and crimp the edges of the dough. Chill in the refrigerator.
  • Prepare the topping by mixing flour, pecans, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. Drizzle melted butter over the mixture in a circular motion and toss with a fork until combined.
  • Prepare the filling: Mix apples, sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove together in a large bowl, ensuring all ingredients are evenly distributed.
  • Prepare the pie for baking: Take out the chilled pie crust. Fill the pie plate with the apples, adjust as needed, and sprinkle with crumble topping. Bake at 375°F for 55 minutes. If the pie edges brown too quickly, shield them with foil.
  • Allow the pie to cool on a rack for 30 minutes, then top with freshly whipped cream or vanilla ice cream and caramel. If you enjoyed the recipe, please rate it and share your thoughts in the comments!
