Indulge in the irresistible flavors of fall with this homemade apple pie topped with a delicious crumble.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup Gold Medal™ All Purpose Flour
  • 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons cold water
  • 8 cups sliced cored peeled apples
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup Gold Medal™ All Purpose Flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup Gold Medal™ All Purpose Flour
  • 2/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
Instructions:
  • Combine 1 cup flour and salt in a medium bowl. Use a pastry blender or two knives to cut in shortening until mixture resembles small peas. Add cold water 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with a fork until dough comes together. Shape into a round, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 45 minutes. Ensure dough is firm but pliable for flaky pastry. Let soften slightly before rolling if refrigerated longer.
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F. Roll out the pastry dough on a floured surface with a floured rolling pin into a circle 2 inches larger than the 9-inch pie plate. Gently fold the pastry into quarters and transfer it to the pie plate. Unfold the pastry and gently press it against the bottom and sides of the plate, being careful not to stretch it. Trim the overhanging edge of pastry to 1 inch from the rim of the plate. Tuck and roll the excess pastry under to align with the plate edge and create your desired fluted design.
  • In a large bowl, gently mix together all the Filling ingredients. Transfer the mixture into a pie plate, ensuring the apples are mounded towards the center.
  • Mix 1 cup of flour, brown sugar, and butter in a medium bowl using a pastry blender or your fingers until crumbs form. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the pie, then sprinkle 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar on top.
  • Bake for 45 to 55 minutes until the pie crust and crumb topping turn a rich golden brown and the filling starts to bubble. Cool on a wire rack.
