Easy and crowd-pleasing apple pie bars with sweet filling and tender shortbread crusts.
Ingredients:
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 8 tablespoons cold water, or more as needed
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 7 cups finely chopped apples
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon milk, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, mix together 4 cups of flour, baking powder, and salt. Use a fork to incorporate the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Combine egg yolks, cold water, and lemon juice in a separate bowl. Mix into the flour mixture using a fork until a dough ball forms. Split the dough in half. Roll out one half and press it into the bottom of a 10x15-inch baking pan.
  • Mix together the apples, sugar, 1/4 cup flour, and ground cinnamon in a bowl to create the delicious filling. Then, evenly spread it over the dough in the pan.
  • Roll out the remaining dough and place it on top of the filling. Gently brush the surface with milk and use a sharp knife to create slits in the dough.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before cutting into 24 bars.
