Indulge in a French classic - a ham and grilled cheese sandwich topped with a fried egg, perfect for a delicious and simple meal!
Ingredients:
  • 2 slices sandwich bread, any favorite variety
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 thin slices Gruyere, or other firm, melting cheese (like Comté, Emmental, Jarlsberg), or enough cheese to cover the bread slices
  • 2 thin slices deli ham, like Black Forest
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large egg
  • Pinch teaspoon salt
  • Pinch teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme or parsley
Instructions:
  • Prepare the sandwich: Spread mayonnaise on both slices of bread, then flip and spread mustard on the other side. Layer one slice of cheese, ham, and the remaining slice of cheese on one side of bread. Place the other slice of bread on top, mustard-side down. Ensure the mayonnaise sides are facing out.
  • Cook the sandwiches: Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat until melted. Add the sandwich and use a bacon press, grill press, or panini press to press it down (or press a few times with your spatula). Cook for 3 minutes until the bottom slice of bread is golden. Carefully flip the sandwich in the skillet, place the press back on top (or press with the spatula), and cook for another 3 minutes until the underside is golden. Transfer to a plate.
  • Prepare the egg sunny-side up: Wipe the skillet clean. Heat olive oil in the skillet over medium heat until it shimmers. Add the egg and cook for exactly 1 minute. Cover and cook for 30 to 60 seconds until the whites are fully set. Opt for a runny yolk for this sandwich or cook longer for a firm yolk preference.
  • Plating: Gently place the egg on top of the sandwich and season with a pinch of salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of thyme or parsley. Serve promptly.
