Baking bread is a gratifying and therapeutic experience that opens up endless creative possibilities. Experiment with different flours like wholewheat, rye, and spelt to make a variety of breads. It's a fun activity to do with kids too!
Ingredients:
  • 1 x 7 g sachet of dried yeast
  • 1 kg strong bread flour plus extra for dusting
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, pour in 650ml of tepid water. Add yeast and mix with a fork for a couple of minutes. Add most of the flour and half a teaspoon of sea salt. Mix with a fork until well combined. Use your hands to bring the dough together, adding more flour as needed to prevent sticking. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes until silky and elastic. Shape the dough into a ball, place in a bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise for 1-1.5 hours in a warm place until doubled in size. Once doubled, punch down the dough, knead briefly, shape or flavor as desired, then let it rise for another 30 minutes to 1 hour until doubled again. Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4. Bake the bread for about 35 minutes until golden. Check for doneness by tapping the bottom - if it sounds hollow, it's ready; if not, bake a little longer. Cool the loaf on a rack before serving.
