Skip the dough and use split buns for quick and flavorful mini pizzas or appetizers.
Ingredients:
  • 8 Ball Park® Hot Dog Buns
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 3 teaspoons garlic granules
  • 3 teaspoons dried Italian herb blend
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 pound bulk mild Italian sausage
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic granules
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herb blend
  • 0.5 pound pepperoni slices
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 sprigs Fresh oregano sprigs
  • 1 pinch Crushed red pepper
Instructions:
  • In a saucepan over medium-high heat, mix together tomato sauce, garlic, 3 teaspoons of herbs, paprika, salt, and pepper to create a flavorful sauce.
  • Once the sauce reaches a boil, lower the heat to a gentle simmer. Cover the saucepan and let it simmer on low for 15 minutes.
  • Break apart the Italian sausage in a pan and cook on medium heat until it turns brown, which should take about 15 minutes. Drain on paper towels and set aside.
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 400 degrees F.
  • Combine the olive oil, garlic, and 1 teaspoon of herb blend in a small bowl.
  • Arrange opened hot dog buns on foil-lined sheet pans.
  • For making 16 appetizers, carefully split buns in halves along the folds. For 8 pizzas, keep the buns whole.
  • Coat the buns with the flavorful olive oil mixture.
  • Bake buns in the oven until edges are lightly browned, for approximately 5 minutes.
  • Take the pan out of the oven and generously coat each bun with the luscious warm tomato sauce.
  • Cover with savory browned Italian sausage, zesty pepperoni slices, and a generous amount of gooey mozzarella and flavorful Parmesan cheeses.
  • Place the pan back in the oven and bake at 400 degrees F until the cheeses are bubbly, about 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Garnish with fresh oregano leaves and a sprinkle of crushed red pepper, to taste.
