Indulge in a decadent French onion soup with caramelized onions, savory broth, and gooey melted cheese on crunchy toasted French bread.
Ingredients:
  • 0.25 cup butter
  • 3 onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2.5 cups water
  • 0.5 cup red wine
  • 2 (10.5 ounce) cans condensed beef broth
  • 1 French baguette
  • 8 ounces sliced Swiss cheese
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C) for the perfect cooking temperature.
  • In a 4-quart saucepan over medium heat, melt butter until sizzling. Stir in onions and sugar, cooking until onions caramelize and turn golden brown, approximately 10 minutes.
  • Blend flour into the onions and pan juices, then pour in water, wine, and beef broth. Bring to a boil, then simmer covered on low heat for 10 minutes.
  • While the soup simmers, slice four 1-inch-thick pieces from the baguette, saving the rest for later. Toast the slices in the preheated oven until golden, approximately 10 minutes. Set aside and raise the oven temperature to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  • 1. Divide the soup among four 12-ounce, oven-safe bowls. 2. Top each bowl of soup with a slice of toasted baguette. 3. Fold Swiss cheese slices and place them on the bread. 4. Arrange the bowls on a cookie sheet for easier transportation.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the cheese is gooey and bubbly, around 10 minutes.
