German heart-shaped cookies, Herrnhuter Herzen, adorned with white and pink icing, are as charming as they are delicious.
Ingredients:
  • 3.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar, divided
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice, or more as needed
  • 1 tablespoon raspberry syrup, or more as needed
Instructions:
  • In a large bowl, mix flour, 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of butter, white sugar, and eggs until a smooth dough forms. Shape the dough into a ball, flatten it, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 2 hours.
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and get your baking sheets ready by greasing them up or lining them with parchment paper.
  • Sprinkle flour on a clean surface and roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out hearts and place them on baking sheets.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until lightly browned, about 10-15 minutes. Carefully transfer to wire racks, then cool completely for about 20 minutes.
  • Combine 1 cup of confectioners' sugar with lemon juice until a thick icing forms. Cover half of the hearts with the white icing. Then, mix the remaining 1 cup of confectioners' sugar with raspberry syrup and cover the other half with pink icing. Allow the cookies to sit until the icing is completely dry, which may take about 2 hours or overnight.
