Elevate classic Italian dish with gnocchi, homemade tomato sauce, and melted mozzarella cheese, broiled to perfection.
Ingredients:
  • 0.25 cup olive oil
  • 2 (12 ounce) packages refrigerated gnocchi
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced, or more to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch sugar
  • 1 (28 ounce) can whole Italian plum tomatoes (preferably San Marzano)
  • 8 ounces marinated mozzarella balls
  • fresh parsley or basil (optional)
Instructions:
  • Begin by unwrapping the marinated mozzarella balls and carefully pour out 1/4 cup of the flavorful oil.
  • Heat oil in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Cook gnocchi in batches until golden and heated through. Then, divide the gnocchi evenly among 4 gratin dishes.
  • In the same skillet, infuse the oil with garlic and red chili flakes until fragrant for about 30 seconds. Then, mix in salt and sugar followed by pouring in the tomatoes. Crush and break up the tomatoes using a wooden spoon.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil, then lower the heat, cover, and let the tomatoes simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Position an oven rack 6 inches away from the heat source and preheat the broiler in the oven.
  • Adjust seasonings to taste in the sauce. Cover the gnocchi with tomato sauce, then place 3 marinated mozzarella balls on top of each dish before placing them on a baking sheet.
  • Place the baking sheet in the oven and broil until the mozzarella balls are melted and golden browned, which should take 3 to 5 minutes. If desired, garnish with parsley or basil before serving immediately.
