Caramelized onion soup with crispy croutons, a golden delight!
Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 3 slices bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 large onions, cut into fourths and sliced (1 1/2 lb)
  • 2 cans (10 1/2 oz each) condensed beef broth
  • 2 soup cans water
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Melt 1/4 cup butter in a 13x9-inch pan in the oven. Coat bread cubes evenly in melted butter, then sprinkle with cheese. Bake uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and crisp.
  • Lower oven heat to 325°F. Melt 1/4 cup of butter in a 4-quart ovenproof Dutch oven over medium heat. Mix in brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce. Coat onions in the butter mixture.
  • Bake uncovered for 2 1/2 hours, stirring every hour, until onions are deep golden brown. Remove from oven and stir in broth and water. Heat on stovetop until boiling. Serve with croutons.
