Golden brown onion bread topped with onion circles, perfect for making a delicious ham sandwich.
Ingredients:
  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1.5 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 tablespoon minced onions
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 3.5 cups bread flour
  • 0.5 onion
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions:
  • Combine yeast and sugar in warm water in a large mixing bowl. Allow to sit until creamy, approximately 10 minutes.
  • Combine salt, shortening, minced onions, oregano, and 2 cups of bread flour into the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the rest of the flour, adding 1/2 cup at a time and beating thoroughly after each addition. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise in a warm spot until doubled in volume, approximately 1 hour.
  • Deflate the dough by stirring, then transfer it into a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise until the dough reaches within 1/2 inch of the top of the pan, approximately 40 minutes. While waiting, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Once the loaf has doubled in size, delicately place the onion slices on the surface. Drizzle the melted butter over the top and bake in a preheated oven until beautifully golden brown, which usually takes 35 to 40 minutes. Transfer the loaf out of the pan and let it cool on a wire rack.
