Gruyere, Apple, and Fig Jam Panini

Gourmet Grilled Cheese Panini with gruyere, green apple, and fig jam.
Ingredients:
  • 2 Tbsp butter, at room temperature to make it easy to spread
  • 4 slices rustic whole-grain bread, sliced from a dense bakery loaf
  • 2 Tbsp fig jam
  • 4 ounces Gruyere cheese, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 Granny Smith apple, cored and thinly sliced
Instructions:
  • Preheat the panini press or a cast iron frying pan to medium-high heat.
  • Prepare the sandwich layers: Butter two slices of bread and spread fig jam on the other side of each slice. Add sliced cheese, apple slices, and more cheese to one slice. Complete the sandwich by placing the other bread slice on top with the buttered side facing up.
  • For paninis: Grill up to two at a time in the panini press until cheese is melted and bread is toasted, about 4 to 5 minutes. For grilled cheese: Cook in a heated cast iron pan until one side is browned, carefully flip using a metal spatula, and toast until cheese is melted on both sides. Adjust heat if needed.
