Transform your gingerbread men cutters into spooky Halloween skeleton cookies with ease.
Ingredients:
  • 1.5 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1.5 teaspoons almond flavoring
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2 teaspoons milk, plus more as needed
  • 2 teaspoons light corn syrup, or more as needed
  • 0.25 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (1.5 ounce) tube black decorating gel
Instructions:
  • In a bowl, use an electric mixer to blend together sugar and butter until creamy. Then, add eggs, 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and almond flavoring and mix until well combined.
  • Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl. Incorporate the flour mixture into the creamy butter mixture until fully combined. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours, or overnight.
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and prepare 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of confectioners' sugar on the work surface and roll out the dough into a 1/4-inch-thick circle. Use a gingerbread man cookie cutter to cut out figures and place them on baking sheets.
  • Bake in the warm oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Gently remove from baking sheets and place on wire racks to cool completely, approximately 20 minutes.
  • Mix 1 cup of confectioners' sugar and milk in a small bowl until creamy. Incorporate corn syrup and 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract until the icing is shiny. Adjust consistency by adding more corn syrup if needed.
  • Transfer the icing into a piping bag with a small plain tip. Use it to create a skull inside the head and a skeleton on the body of the cookie, including 3 horizontal lines for the ribs. Allow the cookies to set until the icing is completely dry, which typically takes about 2 hours, or best overnight.
  • Using elegant black decorating gel, carefully craft eyes, a nose, and a mouth on the skull-shaped cookies. Allow them to set and dry for approximately 1 hour.
