Heart-shaped strawberry shortcakes with layers of fresh berries and fluffy whipped cream elevate a summertime treat to extraordinary heights.
Ingredients:
  • 3.5 cups self-rising flour
  • 0.33333334326744 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1.25 cups chilled butter, cut into pieces
  • 3.5 cups whipped cream
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 cups whipped cream, or as desired
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and elegantly line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Sift together self-rising flour, 1/3 cup of sugar, and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl. Add cold butter pieces and cut them into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter until it resembles crumbs. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg and whipped cream, then pour into the flour mixture bowl. Add milk and vanilla extract, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 1 minute until smooth. Then, shape and spread the dough onto the baking sheet, and generously sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of sugar.
  • Bake the cake until it turns golden brown, approximately 20 minutes. Let the cake cool fully. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out 16 hearts from the cake. Gently wiggle the cutter while cutting to help release the hearts easily. Handle the cut-outs delicately to prevent any breakage.
  • In a bowl, gently toss strawberries with 3 tablespoons of sugar. Place a heart-shaped shortcake on a plate, layer with sweetened strawberries, spoon 2 tablespoons of whipped cream over the berries, add another heart-shaped shortcake on top, and serve.
