Indulgent ham and potato casserole with creamy homemade sauce, perfect for festive gatherings.
Ingredients:
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup diced yellow onion
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided, or to taste
  • 0.5 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 0.125 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme leaves
  • 4.5 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 8 ounces grated sharp white Cheddar cheese
  • 1 pound thinly sliced ham
Instructions:
  • Prep your ingredients and preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a pot over medium heat, melt butter until sizzling. Stir in onions and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Cook until soft and translucent, for about 5 minutes.
  • Add flour to the pan and cook while stirring for about 2 minutes to remove the starchy, raw taste.
  • Combine heavy cream and milk in a saucepan. Whisk over medium-high heat until the mixture simmers and thickens.
  • Season with 1 teaspoon of salt, pepper, and cayenne, and grate in some fresh nutmeg.
  • Remove the pan from the heat, then mix in Worcestershire sauce and freshly picked thyme leaves. Set aside for later use.
  • Spread a generous layer of 25% of the reserved sauce on the bottom of a deep 10x15-inch casserole dish.
  • Create a bed of sliced potatoes and season with a pinch of salt. Pour 1/3 of the sauce and sprinkle 1/3 of the grated Cheddar cheese on top. Add a layer of half of the sliced ham.
  • Add another layer of thinly sliced potatoes on top and generously season with salt. Pour half of the remaining sauce over the potatoes, then continue layering with Cheddar cheese and ham.
  • Place the final layer of potatoes on the top, then generously pour over the remaining sauce and spread it evenly using a spatula. Finally, sprinkle the remaining Cheddar cheese on top.
  • Roast in the oven until golden, bubbling, and potatoes are fork-tender, approximately 1 ½ hours. Allow to cool for 15 to 20 minutes before enjoying.
