Indulge in fresh, homemade grape juice with our easy photo guide for crafting a small batch from scratch.
Ingredients:
  • 4 to 8 pounds fresh picked grapes (we use Concord grapes)
Instructions:
  • Harvest the grapes: Equip yourself with a large basket, wear protective clothing, grab clippers, and gather grape bunches until the basket is full. Note that 1 pound of grapes yields slightly less than 1 cup of juice.
  • Prepare the grapes: Place the grapes in a bowl of water, pluck and discard any stems, rinse thoroughly, remove any green unripe or shriveled grapes, and transfer the cleaned grapes to a large bowl.
  • Use a potato masher to crush the grapes until the juice starts to release. If you have a large quantity of grapes, work in batches, ideally around 4 pounds at a time for optimal results.
  • Prepare the grapes: Place the mashed grapes in a large stockpot. Heat on medium until simmering, then simmer for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Enrich halfway through by mashing more grapes.
  • Get a large pot and place a fine mesh sieve over it or cover it with two layers of cheesecloth secured with a rubber band. Place a plate under the pot to catch any overflow.
  • Strain the cooked grapes by gently pouring the mixture over a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth. Allow it to sit in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight until fully strained.
  • Finish by straining out any sediment using a fresh sieve or cheesecloth. Transfer the juice into containers. Refrigerate and enjoy within a week to allow natural carbonation to develop. Avoid letting it ferment into vinegar by consuming within a week. Fresh juice is always better than defrosted.
