Crispy buttermilk-coated homemade onion rings, perfect for appetizers or as a delicious side for burgers or steak.
Ingredients:
  • oil for frying
  • 1.5 cups buttermilk, or more as needed
  • 0.75 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground paprika
  • 1 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1 teaspoon parsley flakes
  • 3 dashes hot sauce
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 large onions, sliced
Instructions:
  • Fill the Dutch oven with enough oil to reach halfway up the sides of the pot. Heat over medium heat until it reaches 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, mix together buttermilk, flour, egg, baking powder, paprika, celery salt, parsley, hot sauce, salt, and pepper until a smooth batter forms.
  • Peel apart onion slices into rings, coat each ring in batter, removing any excess. Gently submerge rings into hot oil, frying until beautifully golden, about 1 minute per side. Place on paper towel to absorb oil, then repeat with remaining rings. Enjoy promptly.
