Expert onion chopping method with safety tips. Video guide included.
Ingredients:
  • 1 onion
Instructions:
  • Trim 1/2 inch off the stem end and a very thin slice off the root end of the onion: Place the onion on a cutting board, slice off 1/2 inch from the stem end, and then thinly trim the root end.
  • Cut onion in half, top to bottom: Place the onion cut side down on the board. With a stable hand, slice straight down through the root to halve the onion. Place the cut sides down on the board to reduce onion fumes.
  • Peel off the outer skin of one onion half, leaving the root end intact if necessary.
  • Cut the onion half large-cut-side down on the cutting board. Make lengthwise cuts from root end to stem end, almost reaching the root but not cutting through. Angle your cuts towards the center of the onion, adjusting as needed for desired chop size.
  • Make cross-wise cuts: Hold the onion firmly with your fingers curled and knuckles pressing against the side of the knife to protect your fingertips. Make cuts from the end of the onion, moving your hand back using your knuckles as a guide for the knife.
