Make authentic Indian flatbread, Chapati, on stovetop with basic pantry staples: wheat flour, oil, salt, water.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.75 cup hot water or as needed
Instructions:
  • Prepare all ingredients.
  • Combine whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, and salt in a large bowl. Use a wooden spoon to incorporate water and oil until a smooth, elastic dough forms. Add additional water as needed to achieve desired consistency.
  • Work the dough on a gently dusted surface until it becomes silky.
  • Divide dough into 10 equal portions, or fewer for larger chapatis, shape into balls, and allow to rest briefly.
  • Preheat a greased skillet over medium heat. Roll out dough balls thinly on a floured surface using a rolling pin.
  • Once the skillet is smoking hot, add the chapati and cook until the bottom develops brown spots, approximately 30 seconds. Then flip and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
  • Continue cooking the rest of the chapatis.
