Italian-inspired cabbage rolls stuffed with flavorful sausage, customizable from mild to spicy. Deliciously simple to prepare.
Ingredients:
  • 1 medium head cabbage
  • 1 (19 ounce) package mild Italian sausage (such as Johnsonville®)
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil, or more to taste
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano, or more to taste
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and drizzle olive oil in a medium-sized baking dish before taking off the casings from the sausage.
  • Boil a large pot of water until bubbling. Then, gently simmer cabbage leaves until they're tender, for about 12 minutes. Once ready, drain the leaves.
  • As the cabbage cooks, take the casings off the sausage. In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook and stir the sausage, breaking it into pieces until browned and crumbly, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove and discard the grease.
  • Simmer marinara and tomato sauces together in a saucepan over gentle heat until warmed through, about 3 minutes; then, remove from heat and set aside.
  • Combine the cooked rice, sausage, and 1/2 cup of sauce with fresh basil and oregano. Fill cabbage leaves with the mixture, rolling them up like mini burritos. Adjust the filling amount based on the size of the cabbage leaves. Arrange the cabbage rolls snugly in a dish and drizzle the remaining sauce on top.
  • Cook in the preheated oven for approximately 30 minutes until fully cooked. Sprinkle with additional basil and oregano before serving.
