Try these delightful apple slab pie bars with a beautiful lattice crust for a unique twist on a classic apple pie.
Ingredients:
  • 3 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups cold butter or margarine
  • 10 tablespoons ice-cold water
  • 1 1/2 cups Cinnamon Toast Crunch™ cereal, crushed
  • 8 cups sliced peeled tart cooking apples (8 medium)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg, beaten
Instructions:
  • Combine flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and salt in a medium bowl. Blend in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in ice-cold water, 2 tablespoons at a time, until dough forms. Divide dough in half, cover, and refrigerate for 2 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 425°F. Grease a 15x10x1-inch pan with cooking spray. Roll out half of the dough into a 15x10-inch rectangle and place it in the pan. Sprinkle cereal over the dough. In a large bowl, combine apples, 1/2 cup sugar, and cinnamon. Arrange the apple mixture evenly over the cereal.
  • Roll out the remaining dough into a 15x12-inch rectangle. Cut into 3/4-inch wide strips. Create a lattice design over the filling. Seal edges and brush with beaten egg.
  • Bake at 400°F for 15 minutes, then lower temperature to 375°F. Continue baking for 40-45 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender. Allow to cool completely in the pan for about 2 hours, then cut into 5 rows by 3 rows and store loosely covered.
