Homemade baked mac and cheese with sharp cheddar, onion, and a hint of mustard for extra flavor.
Ingredients:
  • 0.75 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 8 ounces macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and grease a 2-quart casserole dish.
  • Combine bread crumbs and melted butter in a small bowl; set aside.
  • Boil salted water, cook macaroni until al dente for 8-10 mins, drain, and transfer to casserole dish.
  • While the pasta is cooking, gently melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add minced onion and sauté until softened and translucent, approximately 5 minutes.
  • Combine flour, salt, pepper, and dry mustard until mixed, then add milk and simmer until thickened, stirring constantly for 10 minutes.
  • Take the mixture off the heat and fold in the Cheddar cheese until it's creamy. Drizzle the cheese sauce over the macaroni and top it off with a layer of buttery bread crumbs.
  • Bake in the hot oven until the top turns golden and bubbly, approximately 20 minutes.
