Try these easy festive bacon pastry trees with just 6 ingredients for a delicious starter option.
Ingredients:
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, partially thawed
  • 200g rashers streaky bacon
  • 54.00 gm maple syrup, plus extra to serve
  • 22 cocktail onions
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • Chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, to serve
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 220C/200C fan-forced, and prepare 2 large baking trays by lining them with baking paper.
  • Slice the pastry sheets into 22 strips, each 2cm wide. Arrange the strips on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and chill in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
  • Cut bacon into 2cm-wide strips lengthwise, then place in a large bowl. Drizzle with maple syrup and toss to coat evenly.
  • Lay 1 pastry strip on a flat surface and keep the rest in the fridge. Add 1 piece of bacon on top and press gently to secure (bacon will be shorter than the pastry). Follow the picture to fold the pastry and bacon into a tree shape, starting small and widening gradually. Thread 1 skewer from the base to the top of the tree (leave 1cm at the top for pickled onion), then place it on a tray. Repeat this process to create 22 trees. Finally, top each skewer with 1 pickled onion.
  • Coat asparagus and onions with the rest of the maple syrup and egg. Bake until golden and puffed, around 18 minutes. Allow to cool on trays for 5 minutes, then transfer to a serving platter. Drizzle with more maple syrup, sprinkle with parsley, and serve.
