Baked whole apples filled with brown sugar and cinnamon, wrapped in flaky pastry, and served with a sweet sauce - the perfect fall dessert.
Ingredients:
  • 1 recipe pastry for double-crust pie
  • 6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
  • 0.5 cup butter
  • 0.75 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups white sugar
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) and generously butter a 9x13-inch pan.
  • On a floured surface, roll out the pastry into a large 24x16-inch rectangle. Cut it into six 8-inch squares. Position an apple on each square with the cored side facing up. Divide 8 pieces of butter among the apples, placing one in each core opening; set aside the rest of the butter for the sauce.
  • Distribute the brown sugar evenly among the apples, stuffing some inside each cored opening and the rest around the base of each apple. Generously sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg over the apples.
  • Gently fold one corner of the pastry square over the apple, then fold the opposite corner over and press to seal. Fold in the remaining two corners and pinch the dough at the edges to secure the apple inside. Repeat for the remaining apples and place them in the baking dish.
  • For the sauce: In a large saucepan, mix water, white sugar, vanilla extract, and reserved butter. Heat over medium heat until boiling, then lower the heat and simmer until sugar is dissolved, approximately 5 minutes. Gently pour the sauce over the dumplings.
  • Bake in the oven until golden brown and crisp, 50-60 minutes. Serve each apple dumpling in a dessert bowl and drizzle with sauce.
