Classic chicken and dumplings with flavorful gravy, the ultimate comfort food made from scratch.
Ingredients:
  • 7 pounds cut up chicken pieces
  • 4 cups chicken stock
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
Instructions:
  • Prepare all the necessary ingredients.
  • Begin the soup: Combine chicken with chicken stock, onions, celery, and salt in a large pot. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-low heat, then simmer partially covered until chicken is tender, around 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Prepare the dumplings by whisking together egg and milk in a large mixing bowl, then fold in 1 cup of flour along with baking powder and salt.
  • Shred chilled butter into the moistened flour mixture; blend in fresh parsley.
  • Spoon 6 generous dollops of dumpling mixture over the simmering chicken. Cover and steam for an additional 10 minutes until dumplings are fluffy.
  • Transfer the dumplings and chicken pieces to a large dish. Shred the chicken, discard the bones, and keep warm by covering with a lid.
  • Strain the flavorful stock from the pot, gently pressing the vegetables for maximum flavor, then return it back to the pot.
  • Whisk 1/2 cup flour with water until smooth, then stir it into the strained stock. Season with pepper and bring to a boil while stirring constantly to thicken.
  • Add succulent pieces of chicken to the pot and elegantly crown them with fluffy dumplings.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley and savor the dish!
