Family favorite served on toasted French bread. Customize with mushrooms, pepperoni, or bell peppers.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound sweet Italian sausage
  • 5 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, pressed
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • crushed red pepper to taste
  • 0.25 cup sliced stuffed green olives
  • 1 (1 pound) loaf French bread, sliced horizontally
  • 6 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
Instructions:
  • Start by removing the sausage from the casings and browning it in 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Drain any excess oil and set the sausage aside. In the same skillet, heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil and saute onions and garlic until they wilt. Then, add tomato sauce, salt, pepper, and red pepper to taste. Simmer over low heat for about 5 minutes.
  • Combine sausage, onion, and chopped olives. Lightly toast bread under broiler. Top with sausage mixture and sprinkle grated mozzarella on top. Broil for about 3 minutes until cheese is melted. Keep a close eye with oven door open. Take out from broiler, slice, and serve.
