Orange sherbet-filled orange shells topped with toasted meringue - a zesty take on Baked Alaska!
Ingredients:
  • 1 pint orange sherbet
  • 3 oranges
  • 3 egg whites
  • 6 tablespoons white sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon cream of tartar
Instructions:
  • Form 6 equal-sized balls with the orange sherbet and arrange them on a plate. Freeze until very firm, for a minimum of 4 hours.
  • Halve the oranges across the center and carefully carve around the edges with a small knife. Scoop out the fruit and membrane, saving both the fruit and peel shells. Chop the orange sections and place them at the bottom of the shells.
  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (220 degrees C). Using a spotless glass or metal bowl, whisk egg whites with an electric mixer until frothy. Add cream of tartar, then slowly incorporate the sugar while whisking until peaks form and the mixture is shiny.
  • 1. Arrange orange shells on a baking sheet, then add a scoop of sherbet to each. Top the sherbet with meringue, making sure to seal it to the edges of the orange peel.
  • Place in the preheated oven and bake until beautifully browned, about 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.
