Prep Time:
Total Time:
DIY Papier-Mâché bowl crafted from pantry staples.
Ingredients:
  • Petroleum jelly
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cold water
  • Newspaper, torn into about 3x1-inch to 5x1-inch strips
  • Tempera paint (your favorite color)
  • Clear sealing spray for crafts, if you like
Instructions:
  • Invert the bowl and generously coat the exterior and edges with petroleum jelly.
  • Combine the flour and water in a mixing bowl and whisk vigorously until smooth.
  • Take one newspaper strip, dip it into the paste, and squeeze between your fingers to remove excess. Arrange damp paper strips in a vertical pattern around the outside of the bowl, ensuring full coverage.
  • Dip additional paper strips into paste, then layer them crosswise over the first layer in the bowl.
  • Continue to coat additional strips of newspaper with the paste mixture. Apply four more layers of newspaper strips to the bowl, alternating between vertical and horizontal placements. Allow to dry for 24 hours.
  • Carefully separate the papier-mâché bowl from the regular bowl using a knife to gently loosen around the edges. Paint both the inside and outside of the papier-mâché bowl with tempera paint. Allow it to dry completely.
  • Spray bowl with sealing spray to extend freshness. Keep paste in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
