Traditional German holiday treat: Spicy dark cookie.
Ingredients:
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 dash ground black pepper
  • 0.75 cup molasses
  • 2 eggs, beaten
Instructions:
  • Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and allspice in a large bowl. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter with molasses. Let cool to room temperature. Beat in eggs, then mix into dry ingredients. Refrigerate the dough for 3 to 4 hours before using.
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and generously grease your cookie sheets. Roll the dough into adorable 1-inch balls and space them 2 inches apart on the sheets.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for 12 to 14 minutes until firm. While still warm, coat cookies in a bag with confectioners' sugar. Once cool, toss with sugar again.
