Pizza-inspired meatball hoagie stuffed with pepperoni, basil, and gooey mozzarella, topped with marinara sauce.
Ingredients:
  • 1 lb lean (at last 80%) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup Progresso™ Italian style bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 12 slices pepperoni, finely chopped
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 16 fresh mozzarella cheese balls (1 inch)
  • 4 hoagie buns
  • 1 cup marinara sauce, heated
  • Fresh basil leaves
Instructions:
  • Preheat oven to 400°F and line a 15x10x1-inch pan with foil.
  • Combine beef, 1/4 cup bread crumbs, dried basil, salt, garlic powder, pepperoni, and egg in a large bowl until well mixed. Set aside remaining 1/4 cup bread crumbs in a small bowl.
  • Wrap a generous 2 tablespoons of the beef mixture around each cheese ball and coat with bread crumbs before placing in the pan.
  • Bake for 20 minutes or until meatball is no longer pink and internal temperature reaches 160°F on a meat thermometer, avoiding the cheese.
  • Using a serrated knife, slice buns horizontally but not all the way through on one side. Fill each bun with about 2 tablespoons of warm marinara sauce. Place 4 meatballs on top, followed by more marinara sauce and fresh basil.
