Create your own delicious homemade bagels for an unforgettable taste experience.
Ingredients:
  • 375ml water
  • 3 tsp dried yeast
  • 40.00 gm caster sugar
  • 600g plain flour
  • 4.80 gm salt
  • 2000.00 gm (2 litres) water, extra
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 20.60 gm milk
  • 40.00 ml poppy seeds
Instructions:
  • In a small jug, mix together warm water, yeast, and half of the sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt, then create a well in the center. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir until just combined. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a large bowl, cover loosely with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free spot for 30 minutes until it increases in size by half.
  • Preheat oven to 180°C. In a large saucepan over high heat, combine extra water and remaining sugar and bring to a boil. Then reduce heat to medium and simmer.
  • Prepare an oiled oven tray. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Indent the center of each ball with a floured finger to create a hole, then slightly flatten. Arrange on the tray and let rest for 10 minutes to rise.
  • Place 4 bagels in the simmering water and cook for 3 minutes. Turn them using a slotted spoon and cook for an additional 3 minutes. Remove with the slotted spoon and transfer to an oiled oven tray. Repeat for the remaining bagels in two more batches.
  • Mix the egg yolk and milk in a small bowl. Spread over each bagel, sprinkle with poppy seeds, and bake in a preheated oven for 20 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Let cool after removing from the oven.
