Savory Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy, ready in 1 hour in one skillet. Comforting and nostalgic, perfect with buttered noodles or mashed potatoes.
Ingredients:
  • For the steaks:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons neutral-flavored oil cooking oil (I use avocado oil )
  • For the mushroom sauce:
  • 8 ounces crimini or brown mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small yellow onion, sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons prepared yellow mustard
  • 1 1/2 cups low sodium beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
  • Create the beef patties: Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into 1/2-inch-thick patties using your hands.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat until shimmering. Sear patties for 3 minutes on one side, then flip and sear for another 3 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
  • Sauté the mushrooms, onions, and garlic in the skillet over medium heat until the mushrooms release their liquid and start to brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Use the remaining fat from cooking the patties, adding more oil if necessary. Stir frequently.
  • Combine tomato paste, mustard, and beef broth with mushrooms and onions. Deglaze the skillet with a spoon and return the patties, spooning the mixture over each one. Cover and braise on low heat for 30 minutes. Serve with noodles, mashed potatoes, or other side dishes.
  • Create a rich gravy: Uncover the skillet and gently push the patties to the side. Combine cornstarch and water in a small bowl, then pour into the skillet. Allow the gravy to simmer for about a minute until thickened before removing from heat.
  • Plate the Salisbury steaks and generously drizzle them with the flavorful gravy. Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley for an elegant touch, then serve immediately with your choice of egg noodles or creamy mashed potatoes on the side.
