German-inspired sauerkraut and sausage dish cooked with bacon, brown sugar, and apple for a flavor-packed and comforting meal.
Ingredients:
  • 2 pounds sauerkraut, rinsed and drained
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
  • 0.25 cup brown sugar
  • 1 apple, diced
  • cooking spray
  • 0.5 pound bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1.5 pounds kielbasa sausage, cut into 1-inch thick slices
Instructions:
  • In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, combine sauerkraut, caraway seeds, brown sugar, and apple. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Preheat your oven to a toasty 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) and generously grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Cook bacon and onion in a skillet over medium heat until bacon is almost crisp and onion begins to brown, around 10 minutes. Mix bacon mixture into the sauerkraut.
  • Sear kielbasa in the flavorful bacon grease in the same skillet until beautifully golden, for about 10 to 15 minutes; then combine with the sauerkraut mixture.
  • Transfer the flavorful sauerkraut and sausage mixture into the ready baking dish.
  • Bake until bubbly in the preheated oven for around 1 hour.
