Savory beef, onion, and cabbage filled bread pockets bake to golden perfection in this delicious homemade runza recipe.
Ingredients:
  • 4.5 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 0.5 cup shortening
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 0.5 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
  • 2 cups chopped cabbage
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions:
  • Combine 1 3/4 cups flour with sugar, yeast, and salt in a bowl, stirring until well mixed.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, mix together milk, water, and shortening. Microwave on high until warm (120 to 130 degrees F/50 to 55 degrees C), for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Combine warm milk with the flour mixture, followed by the eggs. Beat on low for 30 seconds, then increase the speed to high and beat for 3 minutes. Mix in the rest of the flour. Knead until smooth for about 3 minutes. Cover the bowl with waxed paper and a towel and allow it to rest for 20 minutes.
  • Brown ground beef and onion in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat for about 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Simultaneously, melt butter in a separate skillet over medium heat. Sauté cabbage until wilted, about 5 minutes. Add the cabbage to the beef mixture, season with salt and pepper, and remove from heat.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and generously grease a large baking sheet.
  • On a dusted surface, roll the dough thinly. Cut into 6 squares or rectangles as desired. Fill each shape with 3 tablespoons of beef filling. Seal by bringing corners together, place them upright on a baking sheet. Allow to rise for 40-60 minutes until lightly indented when pressed.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the dough is cooked through and beautifully golden brown, which should take around 20 minutes.
