Savory seasoned ground beef and cabbage topped with melty cheese, layered between flaky homemade crust.
Ingredients:
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour, or as needed
  • 0.25 cup butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 0.5 cup warm water
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small head cabbage, cored and shredded
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder, or to taste
  • 4 slices process cheese food (such as Velveeta®), or to taste
Instructions:
  • Prepare the crust: Combine flour, butter, sugar, yeast, and salt in a large bowl. Add warm water and mix until a soft ball forms. Roll and knead the dough on a floured surface for 3 to 4 minutes until elastic. Place in a bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm, dry spot for approximately 1 hour.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) for the perfect cooking temperature.
  • Prepare the filling: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook and stir beef and onion until the beef is browned and crumbly, about 5 to 10 minutes. Drain any excess grease. Add cabbage and continue to cook and stir until steamed and wilted, approximately 10 minutes. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Divide the dough into two equal parts. Roll out each piece to match the size of an 8-inch square baking dish. Press one piece into the bottom and up the sides of the dish. Fill the crust with the beef mixture and top with cheese slices. Place the second crust over the cheese layer and press the edges of both crusts together to seal.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until lightly browned. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until filling is hot. Allow to sit for 5 minutes before cutting.
