Crowd-pleasing retro hot yeast rolls recipe - reminiscent of school cafeteria days.
Ingredients:
  • 2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 6.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup melted shortening
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, or as needed
Instructions:
  • In a mixing bowl, mix warm water and yeast until frothy, around 5 minutes.
  • Combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, and salt with the yeast mixture. Use an electric mixer to beat for 2 minutes. Incorporate shortening and eggs, then beat for an additional 2 minutes. Gradually mix in the rest of the flour until well combined. Allow the dough to double in size in a warm, undisturbed place for around 1 hour.
  • Flatten dough by punching it down, then separate into 42 pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and place on a baking sheet with edges. Allow rolls to rise undisturbed in a warm spot until they double in size, roughly 1 hour.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes until golden brown, then brush the tops gently with butter once removed.
