Irresistible sauerkraut and pork sausage balls with creamy herb cheese, crispy fried to perfection.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound pork sausage
  • 0.25 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sauerkraut, well drained and finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Italian seasoned dry bread crumbs
  • 0.5 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley flakes
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 0.75 cup Italian seasoned dry bread crumbs
  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Begin by warming a spacious skillet over medium-high heat. Proceed to sauté the sausage and onion in the skillet until the sausage is crumbled and has developed a golden-brown hue, which should take around 10 minutes. Once done, discard the excess grease and let it cool for a bit.
  • In a large bowl, combine the sausage mixture with drained sauerkraut, 2 tablespoons of bread crumbs, mustard, garlic salt, and pepper. In a small bowl, mix cream cheese and parsley, then fold into the sauerkraut mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour before serving.
  • In a shallow bowl, add the flour. In another bowl, combine the egg and milk, whisking together. In a third bowl, place 3/4 cup of bread crumbs.
  • Preheat oil in a deep fryer to 375°F (190°C) until shimmering.
  • Form sauerkraut mixture into 3/4-inch balls, coat in flour, dip in egg mixture, and roll in bread crumbs until fully coated.
  • In batches, fry the balls in hot oil until they are beautifully golden brown, which should take around 2 to 3 minutes. Place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain and serve piping hot.
