Savory Serbian casserole with seasoned ground beef, potatoes, and veggies for a sweet and spicy twist.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 medium celery stalks, chopped
  • 1 medium carrot, shredded
  • 0.5 tablespoon paprika
  • 0.75 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch ground cloves
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons red wine
  • 1 cube beef bouillon
  • 2 tablespoons half-and-half
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease a casserole dish.
  • Brown and crumble the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes. Then, transfer the beef and juices to a bowl.
  • In the same skillet, heat oil and sauté onion, bell pepper, celery, and carrot until tender, about 5 to 7 minutes. Return beef to the skillet and season with paprika, black pepper, salt, red pepper flakes, cinnamon, and cloves. Pour in water and wine, cook until heated through for about 5 minutes. Add bouillon and stir until dissolved, then remove from heat and mix in half-and-half.
  • Cover the bottom of the casserole dish with half of the potatoes. Pour the beef and vegetable mixture over the potatoes, then layer the remaining potatoes on top.
  • Cover the dish and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.
