Moist white cake with indulgent chocolate buttercream frosting - a dessert lover's fantasy.
Ingredients:
  • 1 2/3 cups sugar
  • 2 1/4 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
  • 5 egg whites
  • Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
Instructions:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour your baking pan(s) generously.
  • Mix all ingredients, excluding egg whites and Chocolate Buttercream Frosting, in a large bowl using an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping the bowl constantly. Increase the speed to high and beat for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl occasionally.
  • Whip egg whites on high speed for 2 minutes, ensuring to scrape the bowl as needed, then transfer the mixture into the pan(s).
  • Bake the rectangle for 40 to 45 minutes, the 9-inch rounds for 30 to 35 minutes, and the 8-inch rounds for 23 to 28 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or the cake springs back when lightly touched. Let the rectangle cool in the pan on a wire rack, and the rounds for 10 minutes before removing from the pans onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Cover the rectangle with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting, or fill and frost the layers.
