Slow-cooked pinto beans with savory ham, for a comforting and flavorful meal, perfect with cornbread.
Ingredients:
  • 14 cups water, divided
  • 2 cups dried pinto beans
  • 1 ham bone with meat
  • 1 large red onion, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ham base (such as Better than Bouillon®)
  • 1 dash hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®), or to taste
  • 1 pinch salt and ground black pepper to taste
Instructions:
  • In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water and pinto beans to a boil. Remove from heat, cover, and let stand for 1 hour. Drain and rinse.
  • Place the beans into a slow cooker along with the ham bone, onion, garlic, and ham base. Pour in 6 cups of water, or just enough to cover the beans completely.
  • Simmer on Low heat for 8 hours until beans are tender.
  • After simmering, take out the ham bone, shred the meat, and mix it back into the beans. Discard the bone, then serve the dish hot and generously season with hot sauce, salt, and pepper.
