Slow cooker baked ziti: Savory tomato-meat sauce layered with ricotta, Parmesan, and mozzarella.
Ingredients:
  • 1 pound bulk sausage
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (16 ounce) jar chopped roasted red peppers
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 (16 ounce) packages ziti pasta
Instructions:
  • Combine the ground beef, sausage, basil, oregano, pepper, and salt in a bowl and mix well.
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sauté the beef mixture until browned and crumbly, about 7 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • In a skillet over medium-high heat, saute onions and garlic in olive oil until they are slightly golden and tender, about 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Combine the beef, onion, tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, and red peppers in a large bowl and stir well.
  • Combine 1 cup of mozzarella, ricotta, and Parmesan cheese in a separate bowl, stirring until well mixed.
  • In the slow cooker, layer 1/3 of the meat mixture, half of the ziti pasta, half of the cheese mixture spooned in rounded tablespoons, and carefully spread it with the back of the spoon. Repeat the layering process once more. Pour the remaining meat sauce over the top and cover with the lid.
  • Slow cook until ziti is tender, 6 to 7 hours on Low (or 3 to 5 hours on High).
  • Sprinkle the remaining cup of mozzarella over the top of the baked ziti and allow it to melt for about 10 minutes.
