Indulge in the simplicity and deliciousness of Slow Cooker French Toast. Perfect for serving a group, this make-ahead overnight casserole will be a breakfast hit!
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
  • 16-ounce French Brioche loaf, cut into 3/4-inch cubes (12 cups)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 4 cups half-and-half
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Powdered sugar, for sprinkling, optional
  • Pure maple syrup, for topping, optional
Instructions:
  • Preheat the oven to 300°F, positioning the rack in the center. Grease the inside of a 6-quart slow cooker with softened butter.
  • Spread bread cubes on a sheet pan, bake for 20 minutes, stirring halfway through until lightly golden, dry, and crisp. Let cool for 10 minutes, then transfer to the slow cooker in an even layer.
  • Prepare the custard: Whisk together eggs, half-and-half, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  • Pour the creamy custard mixture over the bread cubes and gently press them down to soak. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 60 minutes or up to 24 hours, allowing the flavors to meld deliciously.
  • Allow the casserole to come to room temperature: Take it out of the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  • Cook the casserole in the slow cooker on high for 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours, or on low for 4 to 5 hours until the center is set, puffy, and reaches above 175°F on a thermometer.
  • Let the casserole rest for 15 minutes, then serve warm with a sprinkle of powdered sugar and a drizzle of maple syrup.
