Effortlessly create flavorful Chinese five-spice pulled pork in slow cooker. Perfect for tacos, sliders, or bao buns.
Ingredients:
  • 3 to 3 1/2 pounds pork shoulder, cut into very large chunks (3 to 4 inches)
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons of Chinese 5-spice powder*
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 Tbsp honey
  • 2 Tbsp dry sherry or Shaoxing cooking wine
  • 2 Tbsp minced fresh ginger
  • 2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 12 Hawaiian dinner rolls
  • 1 large scallion sliced
Instructions:
  • Coat the pork chunks evenly with the aromatic 5-spice powder and allow them to marinate while you move on to preparing the sauce.
  • Combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, sherry, ginger, and garlic in a bowl, whisk until smooth.
  • Add pork and sauce to slow cooker: Add the seasoned pork shoulder pieces to the slow cooker and cover them with the sauce.
  • Slow cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours until the meat easily pulls apart, flipping the meat halfway through cooking.
  • Skim off excess fat: Use a ladle or large metal spoon to carefully remove any extra fat that has accumulated on the surface of the cooking meat. Set aside for later use if desired.
  • To shred the pork, simply use two forks to pull the meat apart into tender shreds. If needed, incorporate some of the flavorful fat back into the meat for added juiciness.
  • Top sliced green onion or cilantro over sweet Hawaiian dinner buns before serving.
