Savor a flavorful French onion soup featuring rich beef broth - a delightful dinner option.
Ingredients:
  • 12 cups thinly sliced onions (6 large)
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 5 tablespoons Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup dry sherry
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 carton (32 oz) Progresso™ beef-flavored broth (4 cups)
  • 20 slices (1/2 inch thick) baguette (about 10 oz)
  • 6 oz Gruyère cheese, shredded (1 1/2 cups)
  • Fresh thyme leaves, if desired
Instructions:
  • Prepare the slow cooker by spraying it with cooking spray. Next, layer the onions, butter, salt, pepper, and dried thyme in the slow cooker. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, sherry, and water until well combined, then add it to the onions.
  • Cover and simmer on Low heat setting for 9 to 10 hours until onions are tender and caramelized.
  • Pour the flavorful broth into the slow cooker and switch the heat setting to High. Cover and let it cook for 10 minutes until it's piping hot.
  • Preheat the oven to broil. Line a cookie sheet with foil and place baguette slices in a single layer. Broil them 3 inches from the heat for 2 minutes, turning once, until lightly browned. Evenly sprinkle cheese over the slices and broil for another minute until bubbly. Serve each bowl of soup with 2 cheese toasts and a sprinkle of fresh thyme.
