Elevate classic French toast with a festive touch for a cozy family breakfast or dazzling brunch.
Ingredients:
  • 1/3 cup white sparkling sugar
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)
  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • Dash salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 24 (1-inch) cubes challah or French Bread (4 cups)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Maple syrup and raspberry preserves, if desired
Instructions:
  • Place sparkling sugar in a small bowl and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together condensed milk, orange peel, lemon peel, vanilla, salt, and eggs until well blended.
  • In a large nonstick skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Dip 12 bread cubes in the egg mixture, ensuring all sides are coated; let any excess drip off. Cook the cubes in the melted butter for 2 to 3 minutes, turning them frequently with tongs until they are golden brown.
  • In a bowl, coat French toast bites with sugar by tossing gently. Transfer to a serving platter and loosely cover with foil to keep warm. Repeat with remaining 1 tablespoon of butter and 12 bread cubes. Serve with syrup and preserves.
