Soft vanilla sugar cookies topped with customizable icing.
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.25 cup butter
  • 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract, or more to taste
  • 2 tablespoons milk, or as needed
Instructions:
  • Heat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a bowl, cream vegetable shortening, white sugar, 1/4 cup milk, eggs, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. In another bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking soda. Gradually mix the flour mixture into the shortening mixture until a smooth dough forms.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness and cut into desired shapes. Place the cookies on baking sheets.
  • Bake the cookies in the preheated oven until they are firm, for around 10 minutes. Allow them to cool before serving.
  • Cream together butter, confectioners' sugar, vanilla extract, and milk with an electric mixer until the frosting is light and fluffy. Spread onto cooled cookies.
