Begin your festivities with this invigorating and delicately spiced cocktail.
Ingredients:
  • 100g brown sugar
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 cinnamon quill
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 lemon, rind finely grated
  • 1 orange, rind finely grated
  • 150ml Cointreau
  • 750ml red wine
  • Dried (see note) or fresh orange slices, to garnish
  • Crushed ice, to serve
Instructions:
  • Combine brown sugar, star anise, cinnamon, cloves, citrus rind, and 1/2 cup (125ml) water in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Increase heat, bring to a boil, then simmer for 2 minutes until syrupy. Cool and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
  • After straining the syrup to remove solids, incorporate Cointreau and red wine. Chill for a minimum of 2 hours. Present in a punch bowl with an abundance of crushed ice and adorned with orange slices.
